Yoga and Mental Health
Whether mental health is more prevalent or the stigma has shifted, depression is very real and widely talked about.
AIHW published a national survey of mental health and wellbeing, finding that an estimated 1 in 5 (20%) of Australian's aged 16-85 experienced a mental disorder in the previous 12 months.
My own journey in coping with the debilitating effects of depression has led me down the path of yoga. Gaining insight into my thoughts, feelings and coping strategies. The whole practice has taught me how emotions live in our bodies and how they can manifest and effect our minds and actions.
A few key benefits of yoga include;
A yoga practice can calm your nervous system, allowing you to rest
Build a sense of self, through the practice of non-judgement
Yoga can help you become aware of the unconscious mind ( our thoughts) and how we hold tension in our physical bodies
